A career-best haul of seven wickets for 45 runs by captain Ranjib Biswal steered host Orissa to an innings and 79-run victory over Assam on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Berhampur Stadium in Berhampur today.
This was 23rd overall win and 12th by innings margin in 130 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa. This was also Orissa’s 14th win and five by innings margain in 38 Ranji Trophy matches against Assam. Biswal achived his carrer-best haul in the first innings and added three more in the second to finish with a match haul of 10 for 75.
Orissa took a first-innings lead of 236 runs by dismissing Assam, who chose to bat first, for 160 and then compiling an imposing total of 396. Among successful Orissa batsmen, Amiya Ray and Prasanta Mohapatra scored a half-century each, while Biswal and Abakash Khatua contributed 48 apiece.
In the second second innings, Assam folded up for 157. Sushil Kumar Prasad was the most successful Orissa bowler in the second innings, bagging five wickets for 60 runs. He finished with a match haul of seven for 110. Orissa off-spinner Subash Chandra Mohanty made his first-class debut in this match.
